Post-cruise, Ft Lauderdale/Miami area or Key Largo?

My husband, 14yo daughter and I will have 2-3 days to kill after our cruise out of Ft Lauderdale in December and I%26#39;m debating on whether to spend 2 nights in Key Largo or to stick with a beachfront hotel in the FLL/MIA area. We%26#39;ve always wanted to go to the keys but it doesn%26#39;t seem to make sense to drive all the way to Key West for just 2 nights so I%26#39;m thinking about Key Largo as an alternative but I%26#39;m sure there would be plenty to see and do right near Ft Lauderdale and going to the Miami zoo would probably be fun for our daughter. I always assumed the keys had sandy beaches but from what I%26#39;ve read it looks like that%26#39;s not the case. We love to snorkel and I know there%26#39;s some snorkeling opportunities in Key Largo although it would probably be a bit chilly in mid-Dec unless we rented wetsuits.

Any input or suggestions? Dec is a long way away so I won%26#39;t be booking anything anytime soon but I%26#39;m trying to at least plan where we%26#39;ll spend 2 or 3 nights after the cruise.

Post-cruise, Ft Lauderdale/Miami area or Key Largo?

I have never been to Key Largo, so I can%26#39;t do a comparison, but I%26#39;ve been to Miami %26amp; Ft. Lauderdale many times. Your decision will ultimately depend on the activity level that you want after the cruise. December can be iffy temperature-wise, so if it isn%26#39;t warm out, there are still plenty of things to do in the Miami area: Parrot Jungle, Monkey Jungle, the zoo, boat trip through the Everglades or through the canals of Ft. Lauderdale, people-watching, shopping and eating in South Beach or on Las Olas, outlet shopping in Sawgrass Mills, restaurants and stores in Little Havana, etc. In addition to being at the beach, you%26#39;re in a major metropolitan area, so there will be concerts and shows, and sporting events. You might want to search online to see what%26#39;s happening in the area before you decide for sure. You can also rent bikes or roller blades and get some exercise. Have a wonderful time. I%26#39;m sure whatever you do will be fun. P.S. When I was 14, I went on a cruise with my parents, and it was magical. I hope this is the same for your daughter.

Post-cruise, Ft Lauderdale/Miami area or Key Largo?

Thanks Shelly, I%26#39;m pretty sure we%26#39;re going to stay right in the Ft Lauderdale/Miami area since there%26#39;s so much to see and do there like you said (especially if the weather is on the cooler side). We%26#39;ve taken our daughter on a couple of 3-day Disney cruises but this will be her first on a longer cruise (Royal Caribbean), I think she%26#39;ll have a great time!!

Kennedy Space Centre

Kennedy offer on their website Max Acess tickets for approx $140 (拢70) for a family of 4.

Virgin offer a day%26#39;s excursion with Max tickets for approx $340 (拢170).

Now I know that ppl like Vegas will say:

- Don%26#39;t go it%26#39;s boring

- Don%26#39;t pay Virgins price

- Don%26#39;t tip the Astronauts

but can any well balanced individuals let me know if the drive is straightforward or is the bus worth 拢100

Cheers

Kennedy Space Centre

Hi, not sure if my husband would class me as well balanced but anyway... we drove from Orlando to Kennedy and found it a very straightforward drive. Much better to make your own way if possible as you can then leave whenever you want to. I wasnt sure I would enjoy the visit but actually found it very interesting. By the way,the security there was tighter than any Disney park, they even checked our video cameras before letting us enter. Good luck and enjoy yourselves.

Advisor Girl:

Thanks so much for the info on the places to watch the SB! This is exactly the info I%26#39;m looking for :-) as we are staying at Yacht Club in Aventura %26amp; these looks to be close :-)

We are in the 50 - 60 age group %26amp; not looking for a place where we don%26#39;t fit in.

That Apache Landing Bar %26amp; Grill on NE 29th Ave looks to have multiple tvs, too, %26amp; reviews say it is a good place for game watching, too. Do you know anything about this place?

I appreciate your help!

Advisor Girl

Thinkn-

I think I know the spot - never visited there - but the location is great for you. Found this online...

';It%26#39;s like Cheers,'; says one Apache Landing employee. ';Everyone%26#39;s very friendly, and the food%26#39;s great.'; Reasonably priced, this bar is a popular place. And deservedly so. With specials almost nightly, there%26#39;s something for everyone. You%26#39;d be crazy not to stop in for a beer. Because Monday through Friday from 3 to 7 p.m. Apache Landing%26#39;s two-dollar, 24-ounce Buds and Bud Lights are an absolute must. If beer%26#39;s not your thing, no matter. You don%26#39;t have to look hard to find mixed drinks at discounted prices.

The food here gets high marks. Known for its typical down-home style, the food here also consists of contemporary favorites. You can%26#39;t go wrong at lunchtime; most meals are available in the five-dollar price range, and come with a complimentary iced tea or lemonade. You%26#39;ll find such staples as a club sandwich and meatloaf. But if you%26#39;re palette is crying out for something a bit less typical, try the fajitas, crab cakes or chicken wings. The chili served in a bread bowl is a definite winner.

Interested in catching that game on TV? No problem. There are plenty of TVs set up all around the bar, making every seat a good seat. Look for Karaoke on Wednesday nights, and Fridays and Saturdays usually bring out local bands and DJs. So kick up your heals and plan to break a sweat. This dance floor can get hoppin%26#39;. ';

Sounds like a WINNER!!

Have a GREAT TIME!!

  • TJ Maxx Warning

From past post alot of your use TJMaxx and Marshalls, if you haven%26#39;t heard TJX which is the parent Company of TJMaxx, Marshalls, AJ Wrights, Homes Goods, Bob Store, and Winners in Canada and TK Maxx in the UK had their computes hacked into and all of their CREDIT CARD, DEBIT CARD and CHECKS information stolen that they have collected from ANY transaction that were made at ANY of their stores. Credit card fruad have already been reported in 3 States and 2 other country.

    TJ Maxx Warning

Thanks for the warning. I think I saw something about that on tv but didn%26#39;t catch the whole thing. We had a problem here with someone putting something in the slots at the gas pumps that could steal your debit / credit card info and wiping out peoples bank accounts. That was at Christmas and really hurt a lot of people at that time of year.

    TJ Maxx Warning

my sister works in a uk tk maxx store in the cash office, she has not heard of any problems over here in the uk

I had my card changed after overseas fraud last week just under 拢1000 taken altogether. Not that I lost because the card company told me about it and sorted it.

Hope it does not go back to my time buying stuff at marshalls.

    I blamed the waiters.

They hacked into the computers in May 2006, (TJX didn%26#39;t report it to police until Dec. 2006 or the public until Jan. 2007) any information before that date was stolen, it is unclear if they continued to get information from May 2006 forward. So if you ever used a Credit Card, Debit Card, or wrote a Check before May 2006 at any of their stores the hackers got your information. (Police believe they have MILLIONS of people information.)

    Trillium or Arie Dam

Has anybody stayed at either of these condos or have any information? I%26#39;m trying to decide between to two for my family of five. Looking for something updated, clean and convenient to restaurants and activities. Any information would be appreciated.

    Trillium or Arie Dam

Hi Tropicalmom: Where in Connecticut are you from? I%26#39;m from Berlin, Ct. We have stayed at the Arie Dam and loved it. We stayed on the 4th floor. We are booked to stay on the 1st floor in May. It is a nice small complex with only about 18 units and there are washers and dryers in the units which I love as well. We have also stayed at the Las Brisas and the Seabreeze. Who will you be renting through?

    Trillium or Arie Dam

Wildwest, we%26#39;re from Wolcott and I%26#39;m booking through sunbeach. How did Arie Dam compare with your othre stays in the area? Is there anything within walking distance; stores, restaurants? Were the facilities up-to-date?

    Thanks

Hi Tropicalmom: I actually liked the Arie Dam better than the other places. The place was clean and up-to-date. I%26#39;ve only rented through Capalbo for the Arie Dam though. Bear in mind that each realtor has different condos. Be sure to question them on the condition and furnishings of the place. Like I said before, the Arie Dam is nice because it is a small complex and has the washer and dryer in the unit itself and far less people than at some of the other places. About a mile down the road is John%26#39;s Pass which has small shops and restaurants along with fishing excursions and sight seeing tours. We love the area, it is more family-oriented. When are you going and how long will you be staying?

    Ticket options

If I purchase a 2 day base ticket and decide that I want to go another day, do I have to purchase a ticket at full park price OR do they just add the difference for a 3 day base ticket? I guess there are no 1/2 day tickets available? I am just wondering if we will be able to cover ALL we want to in one day per each park. I am traveling alone with a 2 year old girl. She is a typical 2 year old and I will need much patience and imagine we will need to take our time and enjoy rather than trying to cram it all in one day.

If I go to Sea World and want to go to another attraction outside of Disney (such as IA or Universal) are there tickets that provide discounts for going to both? If we get tired of disney and have 2 days to kill I think this may be another opion. We are going next week Weds. - Sat. so I am hoping the attendance will be low especially with this cool weather Orlando is having.

I will have 4 full days so...I will definitely need to purchase a 2 day base for Disney to attend MK and AK. Do I need a 3 day ticket to cover anything else at WDW that is enjoyable for a 2 year old? I will most likely take her to SeaWorld on day 3 or 4.

    Ticket options

Anyone know the answers to these questions? HELP

    Ticket options

Well...my feeling is that 2 is awfully young, and she%26#39;s not going to remember much of anything anyway. Why not save the money and not buy the 3rd day, and just find her a playground or something to run around in. Most people bring 2 year olds to Disney because they have older siblings who are the ';right'; age, but honestly I%26#39;m not sure why you want to bring a 2 year old. I hope you don%26#39;t take offense at this, but to me it is an awfully expensive vacation for someone so young. She will probably have as much interaction and fun with rides and animals at a local petting zoo or aquarium or ';little kid'; amusement park.

Disney will let you add a day as long as you haven%26#39;t used up your whole ticket. You can easily spend two full days at Magic Kingdom with a little one. There aren%26#39;t any 1/2 day tickets.

I don%26#39;t know of any combined tickets with Disney but there are combined Universal Studios / SeaWorld passes, I believe.

2 year olds are free - you won%26#39;t need a ticket for your daughter.

My goddaughter loved Disney World %26amp; Sea World at age 2. My daughter loved Disneyland at 18 months.

aj, then why on the Disney ticket-buying site do they list the choices as 0-9 and 10-adult? I thought she%26#39;d have to be paying for the 2 year old.

Well,Disney considers 0-9 a child but they do not charge for admission for under 3 year olds-yet. Why they consider a ten yer old an adult, I have no clue.

Every time we have been to Sea World in Forida, we have been able to get a pass for the second visit free within the next 7days. There is a stand inside where you have your picture taken and they give you the pass. I think you will find plenty to do for 2 days at Sea World and that should help defray the cost. Have a great time! They are only little once!

    Apartments close to theme parks

I%26#39;ll like to rent an apartment for a week to do the theme park thing. The thing is, I won%26#39;t be able to drive in the US as my license is not international so will have to depend on shuttle buses.

There are alot of apartments in florida to rent however, none seem to have any shuttle bus access (or it didn%26#39;t indicate). Even areas which are like a five minute drive away!

Which area do i have to be in order to be close to shuttle buses to the theme parks?

    Apartments close to theme parks

Florida isn%26#39;t one of the States where you need to have a International Drivers Permit to drive in, if you have a valid Australia Drivers licence you can drive in FL.

Motorcoach/RV camping in the Florida Keys

My wife and I plan a March to April vacation in the Keys. Does anyone have input on possible motorcoach camping in the Keys?

We%26#39;ve heard that most campgrounds in the area are cramped, but there may be ';condo'; or ';private'; locations available.

Would appreciate suggestions -- Good %26amp; Bad observations.

Hope everyone has a great 2007!

Motorcoach/RV camping in the Florida Keys

    Hi Dan,

My family has been camping in the keys for a few years now with our motorhome and can make a few recommendations. There are some KOA%26#39;s here that we have stayed at before but have found bad bug problems at both of them, but if you are brave enough they are decent campgrounds. The Sunshine RV resort can be a little cramped as it is always full but it is a nice spot. The best place to camp is at the Bluewater Key RV Resort but must make reservations usually way in advance as it is very popular and hard to get into.

    Hope this helps

    Happy camping

We are looking for a safe experienced parasailing company.

    Any recommendiations?

Parasailing info. from Fort Myers Beach

I went parasailing and did the dolphin tour last year and had a blast. We went with Mid Island Water sports. Here is their web site

    www.midislandwatersports.com/index2.html

    Have fun

Parasailing info. from Fort Myers Beach

Thanks for the info Dirty! By chance would you have any ideas on a reasonably priced fishing charter.? One that isn%26#39;t for the True Fisherman but, rather family geared mostly for fun.

Sorry haven%26#39;t tried the fishing yet

I would also recommend Mid-Island WaterSports for parasailing. Great people there (one of my best friends!!)

As for fishing charters, my girlfriends and I recently went on a 1/2 day trip with Capt. Tony%26#39;s boat. (You%26#39;ll see the marina right before you cross the little bridge coming towards the beach on San Carlos Blvd.) There was only one family on there with little ones maybe 5 years old). They slept most of the time. But as for adults, we had the best time. It was so much fun and the crew was great! Of course, being the only group of girls on a boat with mostly men made it even more fun. But I%26#39;d recommend it. If your kids are smaller than 7-8 years old, then I think I%26#39;d do something else....like a Dolphin Tour or something (Mid-Island WaterSports does those too - we do too - Island WaterSports south of Lani Kai) but if you parasail at Mid-Island they might give you a break on a Dolphin Tour.

    Have a great time!

Fishing Boats? Getaway Marina and go out on the Great Getaway. I took a bunch of Beach Kids out -field trip. we had a blast, I had motion sickness patches to hand out, in case. They supply rods %26amp; bait and the Mates really know their stuff-it was an experience for all.

    Disney hotel for 6?

I don%26#39;t see many possibilities for a family of 6 on Disney property. The few suites are way too expensive. Any good options I might be missing? I%26#39;m thinking of 4 possibilities- 1)get a room at All Stars or Pop Century or Port Orleans and have the 8 and 10 yr old sleep in sleeping bags on the floor (they%26#39;d love it)- but this might not even be allowed, and might not really be possible if the rooms are too small 2) get 2 rooms at one of those places and split up 3) get a suite at All Star music. 4) Get a room with a trundle at the Riverside- my 3 and 5 yr old often sleep in the same twin bad anyway, but again, they may not allow this.

And advice or opinions on this? I think staying on property will be best for us with the different ages and high potential of splitting up. I understand that staying off property would open up many more options to me, but trying to make the on property thing work for this trip. I%26#39;ve never done it and want to try it!

    Thanks!

    Disney hotel for 6?

You could get a 2 or 3 bedroom at a Disney Vacation Club resort (Boardwalk Villas, Beach Club Villas, Villas at Wilderness Lodge, or Saratoga Springs Resort %26amp; Spa). But that will require some $$$, though it would be better than getting a suite at a deluxe Disney resort.

Maybe you already looked at that. But since you didn%26#39;t mention it as an option, I thought I%26#39;d bring it up. You could try Expedia, etc., instead of going directly through Disney.

Or you could look for a private rental for DVC, if you%26#39;re staying a week.

    Disney hotel for 6?

I personally think the suite would work best. I can%26#39;t imagine 6 people (kids included) sharing one bathroom.

Standard rooms at Disney allow for only four people per room, or in the case of the P.O.R trundle bed rooms, a max of 5 per room.

However, the suites rooms allow for 6, so I think this would be the best option.

Depending on when you are going, one of the All Star Music suites can be as low as $179/night.

You can%26#39;t have it both ways, you can%26#39;t be on Disney with 6 people and also not have it expensive. Housing and Fire Codes will not allow 6 people to stay in a single room, you need to get a suite. If your looking to save money 3 bedroom pool house off site $89 a night. For $170 a night (thats $9 less than AllStar suite) you can rent a 7 bedroom house.

Already said-you can%26#39;t sleep 6 people in a room and have it inexpensive. Keep in mind that the All Star Suites really have only one bed-the other';Beds'; are convertible ottomans. I%26#39;d suggest the Doubletree Guest Suites at Downtown Disney where you will be more comfortable at a reasonable price and be directly adjacent to Downtown Disney.

You will get the most for your money by staying off property.

However, your best bet staying on property is probably going to be two rooms at a value resort. If there are discount codes available, they can be applied to regular rooms, where they can%26#39;t be applied to suites. You might want to check on AAA discounts (often the savings on the rooms and tickets more than pays for the cost of joining). Most of the time when you get connecting rooms, one room will have a king bed (great for you and the other half) and one room will have two doubles, great for the kids. You%26#39;ll have two bathrooms, two tv%26#39;s, and twice the space. Peak rates discounted for annual passholders (if offered) run around $79 per room, per night, and in value season, it drops as low as $59 per room, per night. Of course, discounts depend on their overall occupancy, so if you%26#39;re going during the slower season, you stand a better chance of getting one.

You could also check into renting points for a two bedroom DVC unit. Rentals are typically running around $10 per point, and it depends on the type of accommodation, and the time of year, how many points it would take. You can do some Internet searches for information on this. It does require more trust on both sides, because you pay for the points up front and then rely on someone to make the reservation for you. But you can save a ton of money over booking direct with Disney.

You mention ';discounted rates for annual passholders'; as low as $59 during off season at the Disney Value resorts- do you mean AAA passholders? Does AAA give you better prices? I am a AAA member and tried checking prices through their site, but it seemed like it was bumping me right to the Disney site. But could have just been I didn%26#39;t really know $$ yet to tell the difference.

Annual passholders are those that buy a year long Disney pass, not AAA passes. The year pass can be a good value as far as getting discounted rooms or if you go to disney a lot during the year.

    Hello kkbrig,

I didn%26#39;t read everyone%26#39;s responses, but you might want to consider checking out the Coronado as they do have suites that sleep up to 6 people.

The log cabins at Fort Wilderness Campground sleep up to 6 and have lots of stuff on site. Also Disney transportation. You can go by ferry to Magic Kingdom.

Dont know how they work out price wise but I dont think it would be anywhere near as cheap as a private villa offsite.

Be careful with Expedia. I booked a room with ';two full-sized beds';. (We are a family of four). We ended up with one full-sized and one fold out love seat. The resort would do NOTHING for us. Expedia offered to move us - God knows where. We ended up with one kid on the floor.

KKBRIG - I would advise booking an offsite condo resort and renting a car. Disney so amazingly huge that ';a little shuttle ride'; to X is a big undertaking. By the time the youngest is tired, the oldest will be nearly-tired. Might as well all go together. It is not as though you have a 3 yr. old and a 19 yr. old. I don%26#39;t think you have ';different ages';. I think you have a bunch of little kids ;)

    Strength in numbers!

    Ying and Yak @ AK

Anyone see a menu posted yet for this new restaurant.

    Ying and Yak @ AK

I haven%26#39;t seen a menu, but have heard they will actually be calling it Yak and Yeti and that it and a new TRex themed restaurant will both be operated by the Landrys group ( of Rainforest Cafe) and they likely won%26#39;t be included in the Dining Plan choices.

    Ying and Yak @ AK

From what I found the Yak (and whatever) is going to be a 300 seat sit down restaurant, Disney wanted a sit down restaurant at AK that they could have on their Meal Plan.

    Siesta key and ?...

My husband and I are planning on going to Siesta Key and staying @ the Beach Place. Is it on Crescent Beach? I am looking to stay on the best beach within biking distance of the shops and restaurants. Is this the right place? Also, we would like to split our 8 day vacation between 2 places. We are thinking of flying in Tampa and staying in St Pete Beach, then continuing on to Siesta Key and flying out of Sarasota. Any other ideas?

    Siesta key and ?...

The Siesta Key Beach Place is by Siesta Beach. It is also a 10 minute walk to Siesta Village. You can read the reviews here on TA.

(Is it a weekly rental minimum? not sure)

There are bars/restaurnats in Siesta Village so you might like that location.

I prefer Crescent Beach, but they%26#39;re both nice.

If you%26#39;re doing a St. Pete stay, I would stay there first.

You would be disappointed after you left Siesta Key/Sarasota.

    ;-)~ SRQgirl

    Siesta key and ?...

SRQ girl is right........if you are going to St. Pete%26#39;s go first or you will be disappointed. It is a wonderful beach but once you go to Siesta Key you won%26#39;t want to go any place else. I was a lover of St. Pete%26#39;s beach and stayed there many times then last year wanted to go someplace different so tried Siesta Key. All you hear posted about how wonderful it is is true........I didn%26#39;t believe it until my toes hit the sand. I was sold on it! In fact so sold on it that I am going this year and taking my daughter and her family too. She also has been to St. Pete%26#39;s with me and can%26#39;t believe that Siesta Key could be better. I%26#39;ve told her once your toes touch the sand and you look around you you too will understand why I rave about it.

Ok thanks. The Beach Place looks great. Is there a better place to stay In Crescent Beach. Ideally, we would like to rent something ON the beach, as opposed to down the street. Any ideas. We are also looking for something small like a cottage. Is Crescent Beach within biking distsnce to the shops and restaurants? It seems the more research I do, the more confused I get. Thank you thank you thank you!!!

in our Sunday paper - article on new rides & attractions

    hi all -

great article in our Sunday Minneapolis Star/Tribune with a recap of some of the newer rides / attractions / shows / amenities at Disney.

    ------------

    DisneyWorld: A whole new world

    David Swanson - January 28, 2007

    www.startribune.com/1513/story/962412.html

At Disney World -- which includes the Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, Epcot and Disney-MGM Studios -- fresh attractions and amenities promise to entertain visitors. Here is a guide to the theme park%26#39;s latest attractions:

ExpeditionEverest at Animal Kingdom This nearly 200-foot-high attraction -- Disney%26#39;s tallest ';mountain'; -- debuted last April and has proven a monster hit with guests. The thrill ride mimics a runaway train in an Asian landscape and throws in a surprisingly realistic yeti to terrorize passengers. As many as 2,000 authentic handcrafted Asian props help establish an authentic sense of place.

Wanyama Safari at Animal Kingdom Hundreds of wild animals, from lowland gorillas to Bengal tigers, prowl Animal Kingdom. You can see the wildlife from the 1,293-room Animal Kingdom Lodge -- or get closer. New at the lodge is the Wanyama Safari, which allows up to 12 guests to travel through the enclosure in a vehicle for up-close encounters with the animals. The sunset tour is conducted three days a week and concludes with dinner at the resort%26#39;s signature restaurant, Jiko.Including dinner, the price is $160 for adult concierge-level guests, $210 for non-concierge guests. Children ages 8 or 9 pay half-price; adult prices start at age 10 and kids under 8 may not participate (1-407-938-4755). Mission: SPACE at Epcot The Mission: SPACE ride simulates a spacecraft launch, approach and landing on Marsusing a centrifuge to reproduce the G-force of liftoff. The $100 million attraction has a reputation for inducing motion sickness; it%26#39;s the only Disney ride with airsickness bags. In the past year, two deathslanded Disney in hot water(preexisting medical conditions were found in both cases). Last summer, two of the four centrifuges were turned off to provide a milder ride for guests concerned about the thrill ride. My verdict: The original ride was a gripping experience that toyed with my equilibrium, but the ';less intense'; version is still a viable attraction. The Seas with Nemo %26amp; Friends at Epcot Epcot%26#39;s Living Seas pavilion opened a new ride based on the three-year-old hit movie ';Finding Nemo.';The new attraction is designed to revitalize a pavilion that was severely outdated, yet possessed a spectacular 5.7-million-gallon saltwater aquarium that is host to more than 65 species of marine life. The animated movie%26#39;s characters now ';inhabit'; a portion of the aquarium viewed on the ride, making it appear as though Nemo, Dory and others are swimming with the real sealife. Also in the pavilion -- now called the Seas with Nemo and Friends -- is ';Turtle Talk With Crush,'; a charming encounter with the surfer-dude turtle from the movie.

Lights, Motors, Action! at Disney-MGM Studios ';Lights, Motors, Action! Extreme Stunt Show,'; an import from Disney%26#39;s Paris resort, sends cars, motorcycles and watercraft careening through a sprawling Mediterranean village set. The spectacle takes place in a 5,000-seat venue several times daily.

Pirates of the Caribbean at Magic Kingdom Capt. Jack Sparrow has been added to the lineup of AudioAnimatronic characters in the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction. The lifelike representation of Johnny Depp%26#39;s character from the blockbuster movie appears three times during the ride, along with his nemesis Barbossa. The attraction received a general overhaul that improved the lighting and sound effects throughout. Lines for the ride are longer than usual.

BED CHECK Like the theme parks, hotels are updating, too. Here%26#39;s what%26#39;s new.

Saratoga Springs Resort %26amp; Spa is a new 828-unit property next to Downtown Disney that is part of the company%26#39;s vacation-ownership program, Disney Vacation Club. Traditional hotel stays can be booked in the studios and one- and two-bedroom villas (1-407-827-1100).

The All-Star Music Resort, which provides Disney%26#39;s most inexpensive hotel option starting at $82 a night, had nearly 400 of its guest rooms converted to 192 family suites with kitchenette. The new units, which sleep up to six, opened last fall (1-407-939-6000).

Two upscale Disney resorts, the Contemporary (1-407-824-1000) and the Polynesian (1-407-824-2000) have added flat-screen TVs and designer bedding, among other enhancements.

Another new accommodations feature is Disney%26#39;s Magical Express-- airport transfer, luggage delivery and airport check-in service, now free for guests of the Disney resorts.(It%26#39;s a healthy savings -- typical one-way taxi transfer from the Orlando Airport to Walt Disney World is about $40, including tip.)Disney operates 22 resort hotels on the Florida property, with 31,000 guest rooms (for information and reservations: http://disneyworld.disney. go.com or 1-407-939-6244) . If I was the editor of the paper I would fire the writer, all that information is dated and should of been printed months ago.

Agreed - sounds more like an advertorial. Apart from Everest (and the minor changes in Pirates), sounds the same as 2 years ago!

    Fort Myers or Fort Lauderdale?

Looking to visit Florida in March just to enjoy the weather, beach, and relax.

I have never been to Fort Myers or Fort Lauderdale and I%26#39;m trying to figure out which to go to. I was hoping for suggestions on which is better at this time of the year or which place is better for the beach/water/tourism. Any other southern Florida cities I am overlooking?

    Thank you!!

    Fort Myers or Fort Lauderdale?

    Ceckel,

There are pro%26#39;s and cons either way. Ft Lauderdale is my fave but i am biassed :)

Beaches are generally better on the gulf side.

Other areas on gulf side with good or better beaches than Ft Myers - Naples, Sarasota, St Pete.

Ft Lauderdale - good beaches, shopping, boat trips, los olas blvd, etc.............other areas in south Fl (atlantic side) - Pompono, Hollywood, Boca.

Weather - Slightly warmer in S Florida when compared to Ft Myers.

    Fort Myers or Fort Lauderdale?

I like them both. The east coast tends to be a little more upscale and expensive. The west coast is less expensive and more laid-back, toes-in-the sand. They both have great beaches, tourism, etc.

As far as other southern Florida cities, yes, there are lots. Just do searches for more info.

I live in Sarasota, so am prejudiced in favor of the West Coast. However, I didn%26#39;t grow up here, and chose the West Coast over the East - life is slower, friendlier, less expensive and more beautiful beaches. I might suggest you google Sarasota, and go from there. Ft. Myers is nice, but Sarasota puts you in closer range to more and better beaches and optional destinations - Tampa and Orlando, if you%26#39;re so inclined. Wherever you choose, Florida is bound to be better than Boston in March!

  • Julies Sunset & Seafood

Last visited Clearwater beach in 1996. Can anyone tell me if Julies Seafood restaurant is still open, and if so is it still good.

    Thanks

    Julies Sunset %26amp; Seafood

A quick consult with my Google Gods produced this:

    openlist.com/restaurants-view-7274412548-sea…

If that%26#39;s the one it looks like they are still there. I can call them tomorrow to make sure, if you like.

    Julies Sunset %26amp; Seafood

thanks chuts, that would be very kind of you.

Looks like you%26#39;re out of luck. The phone number in the link I posted is no longer Julies, and the person at that number hadn%26#39;t heard of the restaurant.

So if someone living nearby can verify, the listed address was:

    351 S. Gulfview Blvd., Clearwater Beach, 33767.

Thanks a lot chuts, I am sure there will be some new good restaurants there.

Julies is now Frenchy%26#39;s South Beach. The sunsets are still wonderful and the food is still great! Lots of changes going on at CW.

    Hello Everyone:

Thank all of the local experts for the excellent advice on this forum. I have seen some wonderful reviews for the Beach Place and about Joseph %26amp; Hernando....I would love to get the phone number to see if this would meet our needs for a stay in February 07 %26amp; then again in March 07.

I looked on the internet and didnt find a website or phone number...any help would be great appreciated.

I double posted in error, this post and that of Sea Esta Village are my posts, my needs are listed in the posts. Any other recommendation you feel would be a better fit?

Thank you again for the information. I will be sure to post how everything worked out when we return.

Hi. I saw your other post about the other places but I didn%26#39;t feel that I was familiar enough with them to comment. Hopefully others here will be able to chime in.

    Executive Lounge

I have been offered 2 tickets totalling 拢36 for the executive lounge at Manchester airport which includes drinks and snacks.

Has anyone ever used this and is it worth it, or should I just stay in the departure lounge with the rest of the peasants?!?

    Executive Lounge

The lounges are great but I think the going rate is about 拢18 - so the deal you have got there is no great shakes.

I have been in the BMI lounge at manchester many times and it is well away from the noise and excitement of departures.

Drinks, snacks, tv, papers, magazines and quiet. They call you for your flight and you walk back into it refreshed. When you have paid a lot for your flight and holiday accommodation the cost of the lounge is comparitively cheap and a great way to start.

You have got to get to the airport hours and hours before your departure so spending that time in a lounge is a good idea.

    Executive Lounge

I haven%26#39;t used Manchester, but I%26#39;ve used Heathrow %26amp; Gatwick, it%26#39;s a nice start to your holiday, so much more peaceful than waiting in departures. Free drinks %26amp; snacks help too!

We usually fly business so the lounge is a nice perk but we%26#39;d never pay. We don%26#39;t think it%26#39;s worth it.

    agree with Vegas here :-)

we have used the lounge at Manchester 3 times and would def consider it a worthwhile expense ... it is a way to chill a bit before your flight and not have to deal with all the noise and chaos of the terminal which can really set your nerves on edge - not a great mood to start a 9 hour flight in ..

i figure with what you have already spent its nothing and it makes you feel just that little bit more pampered which, lets face it, we could all do with a bit more of on our holidays as that few weeks a year is pretty important to recharge!

hope you have a great holiday either way!

    angela

Guess the difference for us is considering what the lounge used to be before people could buy their way in. It%26#39;s taken a dive.

    You are so posh IOWA.

You mean it was OKin the lounges before the poor people could buy their way into your lounge. No wonder the decor has suffered.

    Oh! darling, I so understand!!!

Crumb I think both lounges at Manchester for the long haul flights are good and they seem in good nick to me. The BA lounge is also very good in the other terminal.

Lounges are okay but now a days most airlines allow check in on line and that cuts down on your time at the airport. We travelled Continental to TPA via EWR in December and by the time we had droppped the bags in and cleared security it was straight down to the plane. Bit like catching a bus and no hassles. Obviously depends on how you get to the airport and wether you want to %26#39;mooch%26#39; around the shops. We didn%26#39;t and arrived 90 mins before the flight and clear path no problems no waiting..

Thanks guys, think I%26#39;ll book the lounge. I agree 拢36 is nothing, so might as well enjoy myself a bit!

Spatan is lucky. I am usually there 3 hours before because I thought that was the rule. I do check in on line but that saves nothing for me.

I think you have made a wise choice Crumb. If you see IOWA there please take great care to proceed with manners and decorum - we do not want to lower standards any further for the travellers in First Claaarss.

IOWA will the one with the monogram Mulberry hold all (with leather piping).

I may feel the need to trash the lounge and spray graffitti!

    Hotel help for us too

First of all, what block of Collins Ave puts you in the midst of everything? If we want something a bit quiet yet close to restaurants, beach, nightlife and shops, just where should we begin looking for a hotel? Is there any opinion on less expensive hotels that are #1....CLEAN. We%26#39;ve been looking at the Atlantica Hotel and Suites. Any ideas on that place? Thanks,

    Hotel help for us too

    Hello Rick Scott of Ohio,

Collins is the main north-south road starting from the most southern tip of Miami Beach going all the way to the most northern part and beyond. It is the main north-south road through South Beach which is the most southern two (2) miles or so of Miami Beach.

Because of the shape of Miami Beach (in the South Beach area), the island sticks out starting around 15th Street where Ocean Drive starts. As a result, hotels on the east side of Collins north of 15th Street are directly on the beach. Hotels south of 15th Street are one road (Ocean Drive) from the beach - but a very easy walk to the white sand.

To your question: as a general rule most hotels on Collins north of 15th Street are larger hotels (as compared to the many hotels in SoBe) and most (but not all) and they are ';clean'; - many that we%26#39;ve stayed. As a reference, hotels on Collins with an odd address are on the east side of Collins and directly on the beach. The hotels are one after another starting with Royal Palm ending with Shore Club. Hotels between these (not necessarily in this order) include Loews, National, Sagamore, Ritz-Carlton, Delano, DoubleTree Surfcomber and South Seas. Oh... another one is The Raleigh Hotel.

My guess is South Seas would be the least expensive. We typically stay at the DoubleTree Surfcomber as it%26#39;s very clean, great service, nice pool and courtyard, and good access to the beach. Of the hotels I%26#39;ve mentioned, I%26#39;m guessing it%26#39;s the second least expensive - but still a very fine hotel. It also has a great Art Deco feel to it. As a DoubleTree, it%26#39;s part of the Hilton Family of Hotels so you can expect a quality product.

Unless you have a wild party (or crying baby) in the hotel room next to you, all of the hotels I%26#39;ve mentioned are far enough away from the clubs that they are quiet. Having said that, I think some hotels that have a loud bar or something going on in the pool area may be loud but if your room is just above or next to the event - but that%26#39;s South Beach! We%26#39;ve never had a problem unless something special is going on (such as MTV Music Awards or similar).

We%26#39;ve never stayed at the Atlantica Hotel and Suites. I see it%26#39;s address is 300 block. This is an area some refer to as SoFi (South of 5th Street). It is generally quiet but a couple blocks from the beach - if that matters to you all. It is also a fair distance to popular areas such as Lincoln Road Mall (between 16th and 17th Street). Lots of folks like this SoFi area as it is generally quiet - but we%26#39;ve never stayed that far south as we like being closer to Lincoln Road Mall and directly on the beach.

    Hope that helps!

    Cheers!

    Hotel help for us too

Thanks for your response. It will help me figure things out. I appreciate your help.

SoBe Fan, Can we expect to pay something in the range of $300 per night for those spots you%26#39;ve suggested?

I see so many of these hotels with ads showing you can get a room in the $150 range but when you go to the website, it seems they are all more like $300. We don%26#39;t need a room until Jan of 08 so I am actually too early to even book but I can%26#39;t afford $300 per nite and I don%26#39;t want to settle for a lousy choice; IF some of these $300 rooms can actually be had for something in the $150-200 range. Any advice?

    fishing charters?

Any possible recommendations on inexpensive fishing charters? We tried the party boats last time and are hoping for a couple of private charters later this week, if the money holds out.

    Many Thanks,

    fishing charters?

It has been my experience that inexpensive and good are mutually exclusive when it comes to fishing charters.

I%26#39;ve been out 2 times with Main Attraction and and several times with Captain Nick on Reel Time Fishing Charters. Main Attraction is out of Key Colony Beach, and Captain Nick is out of Marathon. Both do a great job.

This past June, we hired Captain Nick with reel Time Fishing Charters for a full week of fishing. He treats his clients nice, and gets you over fish to boot. If you go to www.reeltimefishingcharters.com you can get his rates, phone number etc.

Go his website, then go to the gallery page, then click on the reef gallery page. The first picture is my father with a grouper, the second is a picture that I took of Captain Nick with a Jew Fish, and the 3rd picture is my father, Captain Nick and a family friend with some fish they caught in April 2005.

    fishing charters?

Buffettguy, can%26#39;t beleive you live in the keys %26amp; don%26#39;t have a boat!

Thanks buffettguy...will take your advice and try captain Nick!!

We have a home there, but don%26#39;t spend enough time there (yet) to justify a boat.

Lightkeeper76 - I%26#39;m sure Nick will take good carte of you. I jealous that I won%26#39;t be there as well. Whenever it is. ;-)

Buffettguy.....It%26#39;s thurs-fri-sat this week...then back up to Sanibel for a week in Pine Island sound and Boca Grande. Just me and my older son. You%26#39;re more than welcome to join us...lol..but MN is as far away as we are in MI. Thanks Again!!

The Main Attraction is the BEST! He even has the policy, no fish no pay! My daughter caught her first sailfish over the Christmas holidays with Capt. Marty.

    http://www.mainattraction.org/

I love Main Attraction too! Had a great time fishing with Capt. Shelby and Ariel on Main Attraction 2. In Key Colony Beach.

I also reccomend Best Bet with Capt Jason Long, he%26#39;s at 7 Mile Marina

Be careful. As in, if the price sounds too good to be true (as in a private charter for about $59 pp)

    Discount Park Tickets

Is there such a thing? I have always paid full price for my park (Disney, Universal) admissions, but I was wondering if there was something I didn%26#39;t know!

  • How much do you tip a babysitter?

Okay, sorry to start a tipping post...hopefully this won%26#39;t be as controversial!

We are planning on hiring a babysitter through Kids Nite Out, and wondered what you usually tip a babysitter. We%26#39;ve never paid for one...always had grandparents available at home.

Also, if anyone has used this or any other babysitting service, any feedback is appreciated! (We are not staying on-site at Disney, so the group sitting isn%26#39;t possible. We%26#39;ll be at a villa)

    Tks,

    Mel

How much do you tip a babysitter?

We used Fairy Godmothers while we were there in July. We were very pleased with the woman who came to sit with our kids. They use older, ';grandmother'; type people and she came with videos for the kids to watch. She took them out for a walk (we were at Fort Wilderness so they went on a little nature hike) fed them dinner and had them in bed when we got home. I believe that her name was Marguerite.

We tipped her an additional $20 dollars for the four hours that she watched our three kids.

How much do you tip a babysitter?

This is a case where tipping isn%26#39;t necessary. In fact, I%26#39;ve had friends and relatives use the services of Kids Nite Out and others, and just paid the rate quoted. But I have known some to tip, depending on the circumstances.

I think some of it should depend on your children. If you have well behaved kids that will be easy to entertain, that%26#39;s one thing. If you have kids that are overly energetic, or who are known to get into a lot of mischief, and you come back to a totally peaceful and tranquil group, then I would be inclined to give them something extra. Also, if they have to deal with any unexpected mishaps (sick child, etc.), then I would be inclined to give them something extra.

They are paid very well for what they do, unlike most people you usually tip (servers in restaurants, housekeeping, bellman, etc.), so they don%26#39;t rely on tips for their income. So whether you give them extra is entirely up to you.

That%26#39;s good to know. The $16.50 per hour plus transport fees will probably have us at $100 for some time away. When you%26#39;re not used to budgeting for babysitting...ouch! But I want to pay for the best care, and they seem to come highly recommended.

    Thanks again,

    Mel

Is $16.50 enough though these days, surely we could give more

    Tip them nothing.

    Ban Tipping

    Mick

I%26#39;d tip 10% of the total fee or around $20 unless your children are really badly behaved. I haven%26#39;t used Kids Night Out but have many friends who have and been very happy-and one of them has 5 pretty rowdy kids.

    I agree Mick

I would give her $20 if she tidied up and made the beds... and if she was really pretty.

    About 45 degrees

    Orlando Intl Airport

    Hi All,

I am off to Orlando on 23/3/07 for three weeks with my wife and our three daughters, (10,8 %26amp; 6).

We will be staying in the Best Western Movieland for the first 2 weeks then moving to the Sheraton Safari (Safari Suite) for the last week. All booked through Virgin.

    My question is:

what is the average time to get from disembarking the plane to clearing immigration, customs and security. We are travelling light hopefully with hand baggage only. I have heard it can be a bit of a nightmare.

We where initially worried about the Best Western Movieland as it was getting a bit of stick a few months back but it is nice to see that it has had a few Dollars spent on it.

Would appreciate an answer to my question and any other views.

    Many thanks to you all.

    Orlando Intl Airport

hi merseybeans i was at the best western last week its been renovated and its very nice just had the carpark resurfaced as well thats the good news. O.I.A is a nightmare just last week they closed all the gates for a few hours cos someone had walked thru without being security checked and all hell broke loose !!!! but its still double-handling and delays even now they have been talking last week about simplifying this but just wait and see ...hope this helps.........

    Orlando Intl Airport

My personal comment might not be the same others but this was our experience in December ,flew Virgin in premium economy with my wife and two grandchildren aged 6 and 7 .All pe passengers and first class were allowed of the plane first luggage was on first carosel by the time we got there grabed a trolley went straight to immergation only 2 people in front of us ,he was a realy nice guy put us all at ease even thought id crossed out on the green card no problem we then moved to customs no line again really friendly laughing and joking with grand children we then moved on to home land sercurity who was a bit sterner as my ocupation had changed since my last visit and he picked up on that but again he was very friendly. We then got on mono rail down to luggage B cases were again on carosel gabed another trolley in the lift and down to dollar -rent-a-car only 3 people in front of us but only 1 guy serving no hassel there straight across the road in car and on our way .Time from landing untill driving out off MCO 35 mins tops .And do use the the Downtown market drop off sevice on return u wont regret it another whole day to enjoy your selves .

Hope this helps any questions just ask

OIA is in Greece, MCO is the airport in Orlando

funny the local news station refer to ORLANDO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT AS OIA, maybe im just refering as they were they didnt say mc.coy but OIA............

    Thanks for that guys.

The reason for asking is that i want to surprise the kids and wife by booking a stretch limo to take us to BWM, as it is the wifes 40th birtthday the day we arrive. A1 limousine service allows 45 mins after the plane lands, so I hope we can make it. If not I suppose we can give them a ring to let them know we will be a bit late.

Nice to see good reviews about Virgin.

    Once again many thanks.

On Virgin upgrade to PE and sit upstairs theres only 48-50 in twos so 25 each side the room is great the service is great and for going home and sleeping great ,and theres some good deals out there now

Nemmis you film stars lead the life of Riley. It is worth it though on long haul.

Mersey - Welcome to the forum

My view of getting thru in 45 mins is that you will be lucky - you might have to wait a bit.

Last Easter I arrived back at Birmingham airport just after two planes from Pakistan and Dubai landed - the security was heightened and we took hours to get thru.

I hope it goes well for you in the stretch limo I have used them many times but have never used the Jacuzzi yet. Nice touch and she will love it, you smoothy.

    Thanks Nemmis.

We are booked in ordinary economy. we have reserved our seats but they are towards the rear of the plane so it looks like we will be one of the last off.

Nice to see you are an Islander like ourselves. Its nice to live on an Island until you try and book a holiday with the extra hassle and cost of getting to a U.K. airport

merseybeans it might be an idea to either call the limo co and tell them if u are delayed or move booking back just in case..... just a thought nice touch you smooth talking..................

Its not bad from here 1hour on car ferry to portsmouth if we drive and 1 1/2 hours max to Gatwick and yes I think flying Pe is worth every penny for the added comfort and service

    Virgin Disney check in

I thought I would get your views on the Virgin Downtown Disney check in.

Nemmis said he found it very useful as it gives you a fair bit of extra time.

Would be grateful for a few pointers on this one ie:

What time does it open and what is the best time to get there.

    Many thanks in advance.

    Virgin Disney check in

Why do virgins get to check in early? That%26#39;s not really fair to the rest of us!

    Virgin Disney check in

We used the desk back in December and it really made our last day one we could enjoy rather than driving around in a car full of luggage and having to spend half the day at the airport.

I%26#39;m sure it is open from 8 till 1 and costs $5 per person , but really is worth it. We got there at 10 am and it was empty. It took around twenty minutes to complete and we didn%26#39;t need to get to the airport till an hour and a half before take off, leaving us free to take one last stroll around Downtown, a bit of shopping and a last meal in The Cheesecake Factory.

We are going back in April and have booked the later flight home this time with the intention off using the desk so on our last day we can go to a park.

It%26#39;s a really good idea - and you don%26#39;t have to pay the $5 charge if you are a Virgin Holidays customer. The charge mainly relates to a flight only passengers, but if you are a Flying Club Gold member it%26#39;s also free!

    Many thanks for the replies.

We fly back @ 21:30 so this service will be a great help, as we can make the best of our last day which is always a bit of a downer at the best of times.

We used it on our last holiday and as we were with Virgin holidays it was free,

We got there at 09.00 and there was a bit of a queuebut so worth it as it makes the last day one of pleasure and not of dragging loads of cases around.

They will still check the weight of your bags though.

    Mick

Merseybeans - if your flight is going at that time, you could spend the final day at Seaworld. We often do that and it%26#39;s a relaxing but fun way to finish your holiday.

The Virgin check in service is worth its weight in gold and, for the sake of an hour or so, worth it as it frees up your entire last day. Situated in the car park behind the megastore/cinema/la nouba end at DTD.

its a really good thing to use, we got there at around 9 hardly anyone there, had a last look around dtd then went off and had a buffet dinner, it does save so much time, we went last in dec 2005 and they didn%26#39;t weigh our cases then

I feel the same way, it really doesn%26#39;t matter to me. I%26#39;m gonna be there for the SB so I was looking for unadulterated opinions.

The Gecko is a good one, thanks.

I had my year probably before a lot of you were born - the Jets in Superbowl 3! So if I were to watch this time (what are we up to?) I%26#39;d watch at the Chart Room (AKA the Cave) at the Pier House. That way I could take a dip in the pool or ocean during half time or if things weren%26#39;t going too well.

    Pjk

well if the Eagles made it and i were in key west the Rumbarrel would be the place.. we were there when the Eagles played the Cowboys, what a great time...we will be on the Freedom cruise ship for this super bowl , they do a good job for the game... enjoy your day...................

First half at Jack Flats because they have huge TVs. Then Rum Barrel because I%26#39;d want some mojitos.

    Pjk...SuperBowl 3 not before my time....Joe Namath MVP !!!

~~ You%26#39;ll have TV%26#39;s everywhere at Jack Flats as well as a

the Patriots let it go to the Colts. The good part was we

    Enjoy!!!

I would be at the Rum Barrel, no question!

i also suggest willie t%26#39;s. they have like 40 diff mojitos and there tv is HUGE. its like 15 feet wide. also jack flats is a sports bar. but they are on teh same block. so check em both out.

My sister and I are taking a cruise out of Port Canaveral in Sept. We%26#39;re looking for a town car option to take us round trip from MCO to the port and back to MCO. What do you recommend? We%26#39;re hoping to find something in the $170 range (if possible). We don%26#39;t need a limo - a nice towncar would be great.

  • Belated trip report

This trip report is VERY belated (trip was early October), but I wanted to do it because I got such good help in the forums before we went.

We stayed at the Key West B%26amp;B, the Popular House. It was quite nice and the location was great. The only drawback was that they didn%26#39;t serve breakfast until 8:30, so you don%26#39;t have time to partake if you%26#39;re taking a 9 p.m. snorkling cruise.

We ate at a lot of great restaurants -- didn%26#39;t have a bad meal. Here%26#39;s a list:

    Croissants de France: amazing pastry!

The Cafe: vegetarian restaurant with interesting dishes and HUGE portions.

Santiago%26#39;s Bodega: definitely worth the short walk off of Duval.

Ernest%26#39;s Cafe: IMO, the best key lime pie and drink (Rum Runner) of the trip

    Finnegan%26#39;s Wake

    Conch Republic Seafood Co.

    Sarabeth%26#39;s: very nice breakfast

I would definitely recommend going to the bar at the top of the La Concha hotel to see the sunset. Gorgeous views and so much less crowded than Mallory Square. We got front-row seats and hung out for a couple of hours. (I recommend their mango daquiri.)

My favorite thing we did was going to the Key West Butterfly %26amp; Nature Conservatory. Utterly peaceful -- relaxing music, beautiful foliage and scores of colorful butterflies flitting around. Sometimes they%26#39;d even land on you. There were colorful birds, too. I could have stayed there all day. Seems a world away from the craziness of Duval Street.

I enjoyed the Hemingway House so much more than I thought I would. None of us were fans of Hemingway (we basically went just to say we%26#39;d been and to see the six-toed cats), but our tour guide Diamond Dave made it extremely entertaining. It made me want to read some Hemingway.

Also enjoyed Nancy Forrester%26#39;s Secret Garden. (I love plants, animals and flowers, in case you hadn%26#39;t gathered.) Seemed very secret while we were there -- the only person we saw was someone working there.

We went to the Key West cemetary to see the wacky gravestones, and that was the one part of the trip that was below par (well, besides Delta leaving my suitcase in Key West on the tarmac and then getting it a day after we got back, soaking wet). A bit of a waste of time IMO.

I wish we had been able to stay longer -- there were a lot of things we wanted to see and do that we didn%26#39;t get around to. Next time, I guess!

    Belated trip report

Thanks for the report. Nancy%26#39;s secret Garden is a great place.

    PJ

    Belated trip report

sounds like you guys had a wonderful and relaxing trip.

Thanks for all the great info!

sourismom - thanks for the report.

I really like reading reports because it ALWAYS makes me want to go back there - NOW. Getting a report of what different people like makes me want to get out of my normal rut and go see different things.

I like to get a view of Key West from anothers perspective. We%26#39;ve never been to the butterfly conservatory, nor have we been to Nancy%26#39;s secret garden. (I know why - I always feel like it%26#39;ll be a waste of time {or worse I%26#39;ll love it and want to go everytime we are there ;-)}. I do like the cemetary. Don%26#39;t know why just think it%26#39;s a cool place to go . . . .

Your last paragraph sums up Key West perfectly. Don%26#39;t try and see EVERYTHING, save some things for the next time.

Regarding Nancy%26#39;s Secret Garden, get there while you can! Though I haven%26#39;t heard of any specific development plans, it is located on some seriously prime real estate - who knows how long this treasure will be there?

    good resturants for seafood

    Hi,

We will be staying at Siesta Key in April and will have a vehicle and be traveling around to different areas. We are looking for good places to eat seafood........suggestions?

Last year we ate at the Capt%26#39;s ......resturant on Siesta Key and frankly were quite disappointed. The food was expensive and not that great so we%26#39;d like to try some other places this year.

    thanks for your help.

    good resturants for seafood

Ah, yes the MN Art teacher!

    Seafood:

    Bonefish Grill-Sarasota

    Barnacle Bills- Sarasota

    The Crows Nest- Venice

    Drydock Waterfront Grill- Longboat Key

Spanish Point Marina and Pub- Osprey

Phillip Creek Oyster Bar- Sarasota (touristy but fun)

    Do you want upscale?

    ~SRQgirl

    good resturants for seafood

Ahhhhhh SRQ Girl I hoped you would answer! I wondered why you wrote MN Art Teacher but it is probably because I%26#39;ve asked so many questions or goofed up the website I posted. :o(

Anyway here is the deal..........this year we are taking my daughter, her husband and children to Siesta Key. She is dying for some good seafood and of course who could resist in a setting like this! So we are not looking for a place where we have to dress up or anything just want good food and a place where flip flops are the acceptable form of dress. :o)

Also SRQ Girl you posted that you worked at a historic place. Can you tell us a little more about the place. We are putting together possiblities of things we can do. Of course going to the wonderful beach on Siesta Key is top on our list!

    thanks!

    Aaaaah, MN,

How old are the parents and how old are the grandkids?

I will furnish flip-flop friendly places.. most places in town are casual....People wear shorts in many places.

    ~SRQgirl

Parents are 30 and we have a 6 year old and a baby who will be 10 months old by the time we get there.

    MN,

The list I posted will be flip-flop friendly. All have kid friendy staff and little people chairs etc. (These are the places I go).

Some other options for kids with OK food are the Old Salty Dog on Siesta Key and Turtles Restaurant on the south end of Siesta.

There is also the Lobster Pot in Siesta Village.

I am a volunteer docent at Historic Spanish Point in Osprey.

It is a 30 acre environmental preserve on Sarasota Bay, with history dating back 5,000 years. It is a very special place.

www.historicspanishpoint.org. (I also teach kids fishing in the summers)

    ~SRQgirl

SRQ......I%26#39;ve gone to the historic spanish point website but I am not sure what is there. Could you tell me more about it? How would it be with kids..........would they enjoy? thanks

The museum site has shell mounds (middens) and homes from the Pioneer era (1870s). One of the middens is an exhibit you can walk into with a video narrration. It was the FL home of Bertha Palmer, a Chicago socialite, from 1910-1918. The 2 hour tour is along paths surrounded by beautiful foliage. (Some critters as well)

There is a footbredge where you can see oyster beds and fish.

The tour would probably be best for kids that were older.

You, however, would find it special.

    EPCOT is booked for dinner!

Can you believe it? I tried to book dinner in the canada restaurant during the April 1st week and it is book every day! We got a late lunch at 2:50 on the thursday.

    EPCOT is booked for dinner!

It is very unusual to be able to walk into this restaurant as it is extremely popular. We have a similar booking as you 2.40, but it is worth going to, enjoy!

dont know why this place is so busy meal is pretty ordinary have eaten there 3 times but wouldnt rave about it veg was over cooked steaks small and ambiance missing still what ever floats your boat

Excuse me, why go back 3 times?

because it was close to where we were when we were hungry having visited 18 times eating there 3 times was not a lot im not knocking it its okay as a medium disney type cafe but to be honest my chef cooks better steaks here on the IOW

Yep..... I believe it! We%26#39;re going in May and got the last reservation available for dinner on that day!!!! I%26#39;m even talking the LAST week of May!!

we have actually never been here before. I tried the Japanese one first and they are closed for renovations. We have been to Mexico, Italy and the UK. We were trying a new one this time. The kids weren%26#39;t too keen on Morocco. so Canada was the next one up. Who knew it was so popular!

    Siesta Key vs. Longboat Key

    Hi all! (especially SRQ girl)

I have an opportunity to rent a house on Crescent beach (and I mean ON the beach). We went to the Colony in Longboat last year (because of the tennis - both my teens know the pros there).

I%26#39;m trying to talk the family into something new - so found this house on Beach Road. Do you think they%26#39;ll have a lot to do at Siesta Key - because there isn%26#39;t a whole lot in Longboat (much quieter). If you think I should rent the house - any comments helping me ';push'; the idea would be great! Thanks.

Can%26#39;t wait until the kids are out of high school - I%26#39;m getting out of dodge and moving to florida permanently is possible!

    Doreen S.

    Virginia

    Siesta Key vs. Longboat Key

Siesta Village has shops and restaurants to enjoy. Beach Rd. is by Siesta Beach. (Crescent Beach is further south)

The Colony is a full service tennis resort. Longboat is primarily a residential area with St. Armands being the commercial area.

Siesta Key has better beaches and is a little livelier at night in the Village.

You can also rent kayaks, pontoon boats and go fishing.

Is tennis a major factor in a vacation?

    Ladies Vacation

Myself and 3 friends have been vacationing once a year w/o husbands for over 10 years now. We mostly go to the Panhandle of FL, but want something different this year. We plan to go around the first week of June for 4 nights. We usually stay in a condo right on the Gulf and want something like it in Sanibel. We need two bedrooms with a King bed in the master and twin beds in the guest bedroom. We love to sit out on the balcony and drink our coffee and watch the surf in the morn and then our wine at sunset.

We cook in some so would need a fully functioning kitchen plus washer %26amp; dryer.. And two bathrooms! We usually have a car and drive but I heard in Sanibel if you%26#39;re at the right place you can walk to restaurants and delis. We would like to spend no more than $200 a night. Any ideas? Thanks in advance

    Ladies Vacation

    Hi Moe,

    Sounds like a plan!

Re: Car rentals.. most restaurants on Sanibel are not near the beaches and so if you want to have a beach front accommodation you will likely want a car unless you are willing to perhaps bicycle to the eateries.

As far as condos are concerned, most will only rent weekly, usually Saturday- Saturday. The main exceptions that come to mind are Sanibel Inn and Sundial (both with on-site restaurants).

However, it is likely that if you wait until the last minute you can get a four night rental in any number of complexes- owners are often willing to rent less then a week rather than let the entire week go empty. And June is a time of year where you are likely to have a choice of rentals on a last minute basis. And most will be in your price range.

    Ladies Vacation

Well beach front that%26#39;s a tough price point for under a week. You%26#39;ll need to go to a place that has nightly rentals with a 3 nite minimum, but even a number of those have 7 nites on the beachfront units. The bedding and baths are no problem as the vast majority of the units will have what you want. Some of the older complexes have the w/d on the floor, not always in the units. And if the 4 days are over a weekend, it can cost as much as a 7 nite stay.

Sundial Resort would meet your needs and has all the other goodies and even off season is nearly twice your price range. Sandalfoot, Sanibel Siesta, Sanibel Arms, Sanibel Arms West, and a few others - but not Sea Shells of Sanibel or Blind Pass as they are not on the beach. See www.sanibel-captiva.org and click on Where to Stay and then Condo Associations for info. You can check some of the cottages as well, but again, the beachfront units are usually more than you price range and cottages usually don%26#39;t have w/d in the units but have a communal laundry and many have only 1 bath.

The absolute best buy is often done by checking at the Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center as you come onto the island and get help in finding a unit. The prices can be amazing, but you have no idea what you%26#39;ll get but you will find great bargains.

Contact the rental agencies as well as off-season they are sometimes flexible on the 7 nite minimum. The CofC website also has hyperlinks to these under Resorts/Hotels/Vacation Rental Companies and also many can be found at www.scvrma.org

Note: Castaways Cottages at Blind Pass bridge are located directly adjacent to where the Army Corps of Engineers will have a major project re-opening the cut under the bridge this summer. Work is tentatively scheduled to start May/June.

I Just checked the web site of out rental agent to verify the prices in June. Our own unit rents for $1200 in June plus tax or $200/ night if we were to rent nightly. This is in the upper/ middle of the rate spread.

Assuming you can get a willing owner/ agency to rent for a three night minimum- I am sure Sanibel Siesta does in addition to the others I mentioned before- the nightly rate listed averages about:

    $150 at Loggerhead Cay

    $175 Pointe Santo

I didn%26#39;t see anything else on that web site that was relevent but I am sure there are lots others out there on VRBO, etc.

The rate per night would probably be a bit higher as these represent the nightly rate based on a week%26#39;s rental. But on a last minute basis I don%26#39;t think it would be much higher.

So I don%26#39;t think in June it would be that hard to get a rate around $200/ night

Just a rule of thumb MSC, take a weekly rate and divide by 5 [not 7] and that will approximate the actual nightly rate for less than 1 week rentals at most condo places. Last minute rentals are cheaper, and the ones done on island once you%26#39;re there the best price. You need to be a bit flexible and be willing to take Gulf view perhaps, or a community laundry - or maybe you%26#39;ll be lucky and get an awesome unit that%26#39;s exactly what you want at a bargain price. Owners will often offer discounts 30-60 days out. The closer you get, the bigger the discount. A few even have the discounts posted on their sites.

Still, I%26#39;ve stood in the CofC while they helped folks find a place and heard the rates. Almost had a heart attack at how low they were compared with what I paid when booking in advance. 30-50% off regular rates.

Never hurts to negotiate even with an agency if booking within 2-4 weeks of arrival. Not a big risk in June, again, if you%26#39;re a bit flexible.

I agree. I almost never have to rent nightly but if I do it%26#39;s last minute and the rate at that time is as I mentioned $200 which is 1/6 of the of the weekly rate.

So from what I can see, in June a $200 target shouldn%26#39;t be out of reach. But as Tourm said- the best bargains are found in the last 60 days and even better 30 days out.

I know what you mean about hearing other people rates. It%26#39;s even worse in the airline industry.....

There are many reviews here on TA for this hotel. All are favorable.

    Orlando weather

hey guys, I will be hitting orlando in a few days. The choice of destination was simply the beautifully weather we experienced last year around mid january. From visiting various weather channels it seems that weather in orlando is not so great at the mo? any help much appreciated.

    Orlando weather

look at www.wesh.com for upto date weather info they also do a weekly forcast

    Orlando weather

    15 day forecast here:

    wwwa.accuweather.com/forecast-15day.asp鈥?/a>

I thought that the weather over Xmas was good - but recently not so good - and next week crap!

I nearly left last Friday rather than next Friday. Here%26#39;s hoping Monday week is better.

    Bobby

Bright sun, 85 degrees and nary a cloud in the sky it%26#39;s not...........BUT, we batted urover .500 for our (all too short) stay.

Arrived late Wed (very early Thurs) and it was, well, dark.

Thurs kind of bleak, overcast, spotty rainshowers, chilly in the low 60%26#39;s.

Friday and Saturday started out nice and just continued to get better...mid to high 70%26#39;s by yesterday afternoon. Coincided very nicely with the end of our convention and first real chance to get outdoors and enjoy the sun.

This morning temp was 70 at breakfast but overcast, windy and forecast to not show much sign of improvement any time soon.

But hey.....it%26#39;s January and 2 ';near perfect'; days out of 4 is a whole lot better than it was at home....we%26#39;ll take it!!

Hoping for the best for your stay. Were I in your shoes I%26#39;d take at least some solace in the fact that ';they'; are predicting less than ideal conditions for your time here. Weather forecasts for anything much beyond the next day or so are pretty much a joke...I figure if they are predicting bad weather for the time I%26#39;m interested in - that%26#39;s a good thing since they are wrong so often ';bad'; very likely will turn out to be ';good';%26lt;g%26gt;.

Bobby - we were out late Jan one year - it was unseasonably chilly then (back in 2000) and they were having to cover plants at night to protect from frost! Having said that, when the sun was out, you could feel it on your back. Will be chilly at night so take your longjohns or at least some layers/pullovers etc - you will feel it after being out during the day.

Sounds like it will be a little cooler when you go out too - but compared to Scotland, where we don%26#39;t feel the sun on our back till April, will be fine I%26#39;m sure.

We%26#39;ve decided not to go again this time of year because we actually love the hot and humid temperatures of late summer (wibble)

Thanks for the feedback Chinners. I also prefer humid to chilly. But fingers crossed that we get some good weather when we go (from 2 Feb to 16 Feb).

I%26#39;ve also been during the hot months (July 1992) and loved it! But you don%26#39;t get two week holidays for 拢270 ($500) in July (that%26#39;s what we paid for this holiday).

Best ride at Universal (for adults)

What%26#39;s your favourite ride at Universal (for adults - not kids)?

Best ride at Universal (for adults)

    Hulk IOA

    Duelling Dragons IOA

    The Mummy US

    All 3 are awesome rollercoasters.

Spiderman IOA, is fantastic too, a very very good simulator ride.

Best ride at Universal (for adults)

Agree with peachy, all the above.

Also Like Dr Dooms Fearfall at IOA. Great views from the top, not that you get a long time to look. LOL

I forgot to add we don%26#39;t like fast rides. :-O

Do you like shooting aliens? Because MIB: Alien Attack is great.

And I still love doing the ET ride, especially on a really hot day. It%26#39;s a great place to cool off...

    Jaws is good too...

I love Jaws - a bit worn at the edges but it still works.

    Daft but enjoyable.

Predictable but still makes you a little anxious.

Just on this subject - Are all of the rollercoasters at Island of Adventures upside down ones??? I don%26#39;t like those very much. They make me feel really quite ill! I mean I like rollercoasters but not one%26#39;s that put you upside down!

Hulk goes upside down as does duelling dragons.

I love the ware rides at IoA my fave is Jurassic Park. I love that bit where you think you are going to be eaten by a T-Rex. Great! (Sorry I%26#39;m a bit sad.)

sorry bad typing should say water not ware

Mummy is the best in orlando in my opinion!! Its fast though

See i love water rides. They%26#39;re much more fun than them things that strap you in till you can%26#39;t breathe and then you have some 17 year old idiot staring at your cleavage as he ';adjusts the harness';.

';Improved'; Pirates of the Caribbean - Good or Bad?

    Hi all,

I%26#39;ve been many many times to the Magic Kingdom, mostly as a child and a couple more times as an adult (thanks to conferences). Pirates of the Caribbean felt old, odd and creepy even the first time I saw it in 1984, and it never really changed. It was old, odd and creepy a couple of years ago too. At least, that was my take on it...and I loved it each and every time ;)

Does the addition of the new parts, which are based on the movie, improve the experience? I%26#39;ll be back again in late March and I always buy a 3-day park hopper when I%26#39;m at a convention. It lets me sneak into parks at odd, random times during the day to try new attractions. I also seek out those wonderful nostalgic fits you have when an image from your childhood leaps into your brain unexpectedly while wandering around.

I%26#39;m debating waiting in line to see the ';new and improved version'; or skipping it for some other fast pass enabled ride, maybe even at another park....

Is it worth racing to the Magic Kingdom one morning and getting in the line, or should I leave my childhood memory intact and see something new that wasn%26#39;t around last time I was there....

Does that guys%26#39; creepy foot still hang over the bridge in town? Man, maybe I have to go in an see it no matter what!

    Cheers,

Brian-it%26#39;s still old, odd, %26amp; creepy-hairy hanging leg %26amp; all. The ride hasn%26#39;t changed very much at all. A couple of wax figures of Jack Sparrow-that are dead ringers! Some of the dialogue has changed a bit, but that%26#39;s not really a key feature of the attraction. At the end there%26#39;s a display of Jack with the treasure. I think it%26#39;s improved enough to be up to date with the films, but maintains it%26#39;s nostalgia. I have no doubt you could find a clip of it on youtube, but that really loses the magic. I say go for it! When we were there 11 am a couple of weeks ago the line was only 20 min. If you went at opening on a Tues. or other low day in March, the line would probably be short- a lot of people head to nearby Big Thunder %26amp; Splash mountains at that point.

Also included in the ride now at the very beginning before you go down the ';short falls'; is a very brief holigram figure of Davy Jones in the ';mist'; of the fog.

This, and the changes potato told about above are the only new additions I could find.

However, because of these changes or some other reason, the lines for POC are now much longer than they used to be. No Fast Pass on this one either, although the setup is condusive to having it (two entry lines and such).

If you plan on riding it, go early in the day as potato also suggested.

    As potato and Kat said:

You don麓t h a v e to go on the ride again because, I guess, you have seen 99 % of the actual ride...

When you pass this ride sometime this day, look when there is only 10 or 20 min and then go for it!!!

Don麓t wait longer just for this little changes!

    :-)

    Thanks for the info everyone!

It doesn%26#39;t sound like anything, other than the length of the line, has changed significantly. Good for Disney for not changing it too much.

If I see it without much of a line, I%26#39;ll get back on for sure.

Even now, it%26#39;s still the same goofy kind of excitement that I used to feel in anticipation of going there as a kid. Amazing.

bummer I had hoped disney actually reasonably updated somethiing... :(

    Fair point Seminolegirl!

I suppose it%26#39;s folly to expect Disney to keep an attraction exactly the way I liked it as a 7-year old but there you have it anyways... Childhood memories are difficult to supplant.
